After earning his BA from the T.E.I. of Athens, Greece, Professor Nik Bessis went on to get his MA and PhD from De Montfort University, UK, in 1995 and 2002, respectively. He was the first Head of the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom (2015–2021) and is a full professor of computer science. Professor Bessis is currently (2022–) a Senior Advisor to PVC (Research), advising on research partnerships and the execution of the University 2023–27 Research Strategy, after serving as a Senior Advisor on Digital Strategy and TNE (2021–22) during his secondment at the Faculty. His current residence is the Graduate School. He provides top university professionals (managers and professors) with coaching and mentoring.academic (2001–2010). He is a senior and a fellow of HEA and BCS. In addition, he is the founding director of the Data and Complex Systems research center (2017–2022) as well as the transdisciplinary Data Science research center (2018–). From 2010 to 2015, he served as the director of the Distributed and Intelligent Systems research center and a professor of computer science at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom. He began his academic career as a Lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom and worked his way up to Principal Lecturer (2001–2010). He is a senior member of IEEE, a fellow of HEA, and BCS.
He has worked as a QAA subject/institutional specialist in the UK, Greece, and Cyprus since 2010 and has extensive experience as an external examiner at UK universities. He was a member of the advisory panel in 2022–2022, while the QAA topic benchmark statement in computing was being developed. His work focuses on building data push and resource provisioning services in IoT, FI, and inter-clouds for various scenarios, including disaster management. He also studies smart systems and applications, social graphs for network and big data analytics, and these topics. In addition to reviewing sponsored submissions, he is participating in several supported research and commercial projects totaling more than £15 million. He oversaw the department's funding acquisition of over £3 million in three years, and he supervised the REF submissions in 2014 and 2020.
Professor Bessis is the university's top publishing author with over 350 publications to his credit and four best paper honors. Over 700 citations and 148,000 downloads of his edited book on Big Data and the Internet of Things (2014) put it in the top 25 on Amazon at the time. His i-10 index is over 100 and his h-index is 36, per Google Scholar. He is ranked first in technology, engineering, and computer science and in the top 10 across the university in the AD Scientific Index 2023. .. In addition to organizing over 40 conferences, evaluating over 25 professorship conferments, reviewing over 40 PhD theses globally, and editing multiple books, Professor Bessis is also the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Distributed Systems and Technologies (IJDST), an international journal subject to peer review.
